The renaissance of football in the Marshall Islands
The Marshall Islands Soccer Federation (MISF) is steadily pursuing its vision: to cultivate a football culture and establish a competitive national team in the Marshall Islands—the only country in the world without a national football team until the mid-2020s.
New Additions to the Coaching Staff
Justin Walley has been appointed as Press & Communications Director. The experienced English coach, former player, and head of the Matabeleland team brings an international perspective and strong communication skills to raise the profile of the Marshallese squad.
Tony Theomae has joined the technical team, confirming the federation’s commitment to grassroots development. In subsequent tweets, the federation also announced two additional key appointments:

Technical Support and Organizational Development
– The hiring of Lloyd Owers as Technical Director in December 2022 laid the groundwork for a comprehensive coaching structure, aiming at future participation in tournaments and eventual membership in FIFA and the OFC.
– Social outreach and futsal tournaments like the 2024 Ratak Cup and the Outrigger Futsal Cup have produced multiple benefits: strengthening the local community, raising awareness of the country’s unique challenges, and attracting attention and support from Europe and the U.S.
The Next Big Step: International Recognition
In pursuit of official membership in the OFC and FIFA, the federation submitted an application to the OFC in December, though a positive response is still pending—mainly due to the lack of direct flights to other Oceania islands.
Meanwhile, and in anticipation of OFC recognition, the federation is preparing a four-team tournament in August 2025 in Springdale, Arkansas, featuring matches against Turks & Caicos, Ozark United under-19s, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Funding: Crowdfunding and Merchandising
– The MISF launched GoFundMe and Kickstarter campaigns, raising over £21,500 in May 2025 to support their first international tournament.
– Official jerseys were also released, helping to finance travel and preparation expenses

The federation’s vision remains clear: to transform the Marshall Islands from “the only country without football” into an active member of the global football community. Recent strategic moves—key hires, international tournaments, and crowdfunding—indicate that this goal is closer than ever.
With the support of Marshallese Americans, the local community, and growing international attention, the dream of a national team competing in official global tournaments seems increasingly realistic for 2025–2026.
